2024 Hyundai Kona Electric: First Impressions from an Australian Test Drive

Title: "Exploring the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric: A Comprehensive Review of Australia's First Drive"

In Australia, the original Hyundai Kona Electric, a trailblazer in the affordable long-range electric car market, made its debut nearly five years ago. With the electric vehicle landscape evolving rapidly, the second-generation Hyundai Kona Electric has recently arrived in the country. Boasting a new design, enhanced interior, extended driving range, and more efficient electric motors, the latest model faces fierce competition in a market that has expanded to include 14 electric cars under $60,000.

The new Kona Electric offers a larger body, adapted from its electric variant, and aligns with the petrol and hybrid models introduced since mid-2023. While the base model sees a $500 reduction in its starting price, the mid-tier becomes $2500 more affordable. However, the top-tier model experiences a $4000 increase. The critical question remains: Does the Kona Electric, with its refreshed features, remain a contender in the sub-$60,000 electric car market?

Pricing and Models:

The Hyundai Kona Electric lineup comprises three models: the base 'Kona Electric' with Standard Range 48.6kWh and Extended Range 64.8kWh battery packs, and the well-equipped 'Kona Electric Premium' featuring the Extended Range battery as standard. The entry-level Kona Electric Standard Range, priced from $54,000 before on-road costs, competes with rivals like the BYD Atto 3.

Buyers can opt for the Extended Range (505km range) at $58,000 or the Premium Extended Range (444km range) at $68,000. Our tested vehicle, equipped with no-cost Atlas White paint, has a drive-away price of $58,847 in NSW.

Interior and Space:

Inside the Kona Electric, a familiar feel awaits passengers, resembling its hybrid or petrol counterparts. With dual 12.3-inch screens and a user-friendly infotainment system, the interior maintains a balance between comfort and support, offering a spacious cabin with adjustable cloth-trimmed seats.

Despite the continued use of hard plastic surfaces, rear space has notably improved, providing ample head, knee, and toe room. The rear seats offer under-thigh support, and the flat floor enhances comfort. The cargo space boasts 407 liters, accommodating various items. Notably, the inclusion of a space-saver spare wheel is a rarity in the electric car market.

Technology and Connectivity:

Equipped with the latest 'ccNC' infotainment software, the Kona Electric features dual 12.3-inch displays, offering Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite navigation, and AM, FM, and DAB digital radio. Over-the-air software updates are a notable addition, enhancing connectivity.

Safety:

The Hyundai Kona range has received a four-star rating from ANCAP, with a 62% score in the Safety Assist category. While it meets the minimal thresholds for a five-star result in other categories, the overall rating is limited to four stars due to the lowest-performing category.

In conclusion, the 2024 Hyundai Kona Electric presents an intriguing option in the evolving Australian electric car market. With competitive pricing, extended range, and notable improvements, it remains a contender for those seeking an affordable and efficient electric vehicle.
