Severe winter weather wreaked havoc in British Columbia on Wednesday, leaving hundreds of thousands of BC Hydro customers without power. A relentless storm dumped up to 30 centimeters of snow in some areas, causing widespread outages.
BC Hydro swiftly mobilized crews to tackle the power restoration efforts across the Lower Mainland, Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver Island. The utility kept customers informed through regular updates on social media about the affected areas and ongoing efforts to address the outages.
On the digital platform X (formerly Twitter), BC Hydro reported that throughout the day, significant power disruptions occurred. On the North Shore, approximately 2,800 customers experienced power loss, while more than 2,300 in Vancouver and 7,770 in Richmond and Steveston were also affected.
The trio of Burnaby, Port Moody, and Coquitlam witnessed around 7,148 customers enduring power outages at different times. In Delta, approximately 730 people faced blackouts. On Vancouver Island, an additional 14,000 customers went without electricity in various areas such as Sooke, Parksville, Nanoose Bay, Errington, Coombs, Lantzville, Saanich, and more.
The impact extended to the Gulf Islands, where over a thousand people were affected on Mayne Island, Pender Island, and Gabriola Island. Saturna Island saw a blackout affecting close to 550 individuals.
The challenges posed by the winter storm prompted BC Hydro to work tirelessly to restore power to all affected customers, emphasizing the widespread nature of the outages across the province.
