McDonald's boasts a menu filled with beloved fast-food classics, and its success is evident in an impressive lineup of 17 $1 billion brands—unmatched in the fast-food industry. In contrast, competitors Wendy's and Burger King can each claim only one $1 billion brand. While Burger King's Whopper has achieved this milestone, Wendy's Baconator may also have reached similar sales levels. McDonald's, on the other hand, has achieved massive success across its entire menu, a strategy it has strategically emphasized in recent years.

According to a 2023 investor update, McDonald's global appeal lies in its core menu, featuring iconic items such as the World-Famous Fries, Big Mac, and Egg McMuffin. These beloved items collectively contribute to an impressive $75 billion in annual food sales worldwide.

In recent years, McDonald's has shifted its focus from introducing new items to spotlighting its core menu. Celebrity meals and the "As Seen On" promotion, showcasing McDonald's orders from celebrities and appearances in movies or TV shows, have been key strategies. However, the chain occasionally reintroduces past fan favorites, such as the permanent return of Breakfast Bagels and limited-time runs of seasonal pie flavors.

While McDonald's offers a range of desserts, it places a stronger emphasis on this category compared to rivals Wendy's and Burger King. With its renowned McFlurries and iconic Apple Pie, McDonald's has a solid dessert lineup, despite occasional issues with the McFlurry machine.

Over the holiday season, McDonald's delighted customers by bringing back its popular Holiday Pie, featuring sweet custard instead of the traditional apple filling. Now, the limited-time-offer Strawberry & Crème Pie has made a return at select locations nationwide, replacing the Holiday Pie.

During McDonald's third-quarter earnings call, CFO Ian Borden highlighted two core pillars of the company's strategy: value and the core menu. The D123 Everyday Value Menu in the U.S. focuses on affordable bundles with nationally promoted products at locally relevant prices. This menu features familiar items like the McDouble or four-piece McNuggets, offering customers an affordable meal throughout the day.
